Een Cornhole set is steeds vaker bij onszelf om de hoek te vinden. Afgelopen zomer zag ik veel mensen van jong tot oud het Bean Bag Toss game of “Baggo” spelen in de parken, tuinen, sportverenigingen en feestjes! Cornhole was dan ook een van de weinige spellen die nog Corona-proof werd bevonden. Cornhole wint snel aan populariteit in Nederland en overige delen van Europa en vaak wordt na een intens en competitief potje dezelfde vraag gesteld: “Waar komt dat Cornhole nu eigenlijk vandaan?” Als startpunt van Cornhole in Nederland was het onze taak om hier verder in te duiken!
Roots van Cornhole
Om de roots van Cornhole te achterhalen moeten we een overzees uitstapje maken naar de Verenigde Staten. Als er één stad volledig in de ban is van Cornhole, dan is dat Cincinnati, gelegen in de staat Ohio. Het is dan ook niet gek dat de stad claimt de thuisbasis te zijn van het spel Cornhole. De stad claimt de eerste te zijn waar de bewoners zakjes vulden met maïskorrels en deze in gaten probeerden te werpen.
Cincinnati ondervindt concurrentie uit het middenwesten van Amerika. Cornhole is immens populair in de staat Kentucky. Inmiddels onderdeel van de midden-westerse cultuur is het verhaal van pionier Jebediah McGillicuddy, die de eerste versie van “Baggo” zou hebben gespeeld in de kenmerkende gebergten van Kentucky waarna het spel zich verspreidde.
Uiteraard waren de pioniers uit Cincinnati en Kentucky niet de eerste bewoners van het Amerikaanse landschap. De legende vertelt het verhaal van vindingrijke indianen die in Illinois woonden. Zij zouden van gedroogde blazen (Ja, blazen) zakjes maken en deze vullen met maïskorrels en er vervolgens competitief mee spelen. Als je je toevallig ook afvroeg hoe de eerste ballonnen werden gemaakt ben je nu twee antwoorden rijker!
Duitse invloed op Cornhole
Een alternatieve verklaring brengt ons veel dichter bij huis en wel bij onze vriendelijke Duitse buren! Amerika wordt gekenmerkt door gigantische boerenlandschappen en deze boeren zijn van oudsher veelal afkomstig van onze Duitse buren. Het verhaal gaat dat de Duitse pionier Matthias Kuepermann kinderen stenen zag werpen in gaten die in de grond waren gemaakt. Dit bracht de beste man op het idee om zakjes en houten boards te ontwerpen ten behoeve van de veiligheid. Het spel zou vervolgens erg populair zijn geworden in jawel: Cincinnati. Vooralsnog twee punten voor de pioniers uit Cincinnati.
Toch zijn er naast verhalen die generaties overleefd hebben ook keiharde bewijzen te vinden voor de vroege roots van Cornhole in de Verenigde Staten. In 1883 vroeg Heyliger de Windt’s een patent aan voor “Parlor Quoits”. Bij dit spel was er sprake van een vierkant gat in plaats van een rond gat in het board. Dit spel was het eerste spel dat werd vastgelegd waar er werd geworpen met zakjes gevuld met maïskorrels naar een houten board met een gat erin.
Cornhole blijft ten alle tijden populair
Na een duik in de geschiedenis van Cornhole resteert nog altijd de vraag waar het verslavende Bean Bag game nu precies vandaan komt. Net zoals de landbouw ontstond Cornhole waarschijnlijk op meerdere plekken tegelijk al ligt de oorsprong toch wel vrij zeker in de Verenigde Staten. Wat minstens zo belangrijk is, is wat de verschillende locaties met elkaar gemeen hebben en dat zijn: lekker eten, drankjes, familie, vrienden en een heel gezellige tijd. Cornhole blijkt tijdloos en er valt van het spel te genieten op welke plek dan ook.
